Jumbo the Elephant - A Legend on A Child's Tea Cup

Just sold this sweet little child's cup and saucer set from my Delightfully Vintage web-shop. (Here's the link.)
It pictures a comical illustration of Baby Jumbo getting a shower from his Mama Elephant. Thought I'd share it here, along with a little info-tidbit about Jumbo the Elephant.

For some history about Jumbo, who was a real live elephant, here's a wonderful site with Victorian Scrapbook images, and their article about Jumbo the Elephant, which covers Jumbo's being displayed at the zoo in England, and then the ordeals of moving Jumbo to America. Their article is illustrated with wonderful old Victorian Advertising Tradecards.

They report that Jumbo was sold in 1882 to PT Barnum, owner of "The Greatest Show on Earth", the Barnum & Bailey Circus, for $10,000.

Sadly, Jumbo died when hit by a train.
