Antique Bookplates and Pocket Watches

Gather round, book lovers, art lovers, and collectors - this week we received another educating and amusing post from Lewis Jaffe, the Bookplate Junkie.

He pictures several humorous bookplates this week. And as a superb bonus, he also turns us on to another great ephemera site:

BibliOdyssey ... Books~~Illustrations~~Science~~History~~Visual Materia Obscura~~Eclectic Bookart.

They recently wrote about antique pocket watch inserts, known to collectors as WATCH PAPERS -- tiny little works of art that were tucked inside the watch case.

"... Originally designed as a simple protective insert, watch-papers came to be used as an advertising medium for the watchmakers in the second half of the 18th century ..."

See the BiblioOdyssey site for more pix.

Search "watch paper" at the British Museum site to see even more examples.
