My Official Olympics Post
Before the Summer Olympics are over, I thought I'd better at least mention them...
I'm not really into the Olympics, or knowledgable about them.
So I hope you'll indulge me this bit of shameless self-promotion... Yes, I know, that's what this whole blog-thing really is.
Anywho, here's my one and only Vintage Olympics item, which I have up for sale in my Ecrater shop:
- Olympics Torch Cookie Jar Bugs Bunny Sports USA Summer Cartoon Characters 1996 WB
- Here's some un-selfish promotion of someone's Squidoo lens on "Collecting Olympics pins"

Master of My Domain
You might have noticed that 'Tique Talk has a new url. That's right, I finally have my own domain -- msdowantiques.com -- yay! You don't have to change your bookmarks, you'll automatically be forwarded. Google has just made the process so simple, and inexpensive, I couldn't resist. They have it all hooked up, so you just click a link, pick out your name via godaddy, who's partnered with google for payment, and then google hosts your site for free. They just rolled all my blog stuff right over, and bam - new url! Thanks, google.
I want to keep all my projects under the same brand-umbrella, Ms Dow Antiques, so I changed my name at cafepress, too (no more Scrapbook Art). It's now Ms Dow Antiques Gift Shop ( www.cafepress.com/msdowantiques ).So I had to make a new logo, and upload it to all those pages. I still have to make new business cards.
I've spent the last few days changing links and updating my info all over the internet -- ebay, ecrater, cafepress, zazzle, squidoo, email... I'm sure I've missed some pages, but I hope I'll catch them eventually. It is amazing how much stuff I have going on "out there". And I'm adding more all the time.
You've probably also noticed that I haven't posted much lately. I think it's part summer laziness, and part that I have really been busy trying to get organized for the upcoming busy fall and winter selling seasons. I'm just not going out to many auctions, which is partly gas prices, and that I have plenty to sell. And there have been so many changes with ebay, and rumors of more to come, I don't know exactly what to expect...
That's all for now... just wanted to let you know about the new url.
The only antique-y items I could come up with from this post is "Vintage Umbrella" -- which includes quite an interesting assortment of treasures with those 2 words in their ebay titles.
Historic Food Books
I told you about Arcadia Publishing having a sale this month on their great history books that are written around collections of vintage photos and postcards. I knew they did tons of small U.S. towns, but I didn't realize they covered other topics as well. Today they sent me an email with pix of some of their books that cover vintage FOOD companies. Cool!
Old Food is Bad. Historic Food is Good!Savor the Past with Arcadia Publishing's Collection of Food Books!
Arcadia Publishing specializes in local and regional history but we're excited that we can also share the history of your favorite greasy spoon, giant ham sandwich or all 57 flavors of ketchup. Connect with the history behind your favorite foods in: (oops, there's too much space here -- scroll down, please...)
You can see that they cover companies such as Campbells and King Arthur Flour. Along with a couple that interested me, HJ Heinz and Vernors soda pop.
I have always thought that Heinz had great advertising images. Look at these darling pickle-girl trade cards:
Recently I had, and sold, one of the original Heinz Horseradish Condiment Jars, with the horse finial. It has been reproduced, but mine was definitely one of the early 1900s original. It went to a happy Heinz collector.
I also had, and recently sold, this wonderful 1906 paper-label stonewar jar with colorful Heinz Apple Butter labels-- in super condition. I doubt if I'll ever get either of these scarce items again, but it was fun to have them for a while. I can't keep everything.
I haven't had many Vernors items, but here are a couple signs that have been on ebay recently:
Besides Arcadia's vernors book, there is also 'The Vernor's Story- From Gnomes to Now' by Lawrence L. Rouch:
There's even a Vernor's Ginger Ale Collectors Club Website, and it just so happens they are having a mini-convention next weekend... how's that for timing?

York EXPO Bottle Show Report
Well, word is out that the York EXPO Bottle Show was AWESOME! Congrats to show chairpeoples, the Lowrys, and all the folks who worked so hard put it together.
Ball jar nut, and friend, Bruce Schank has written about the show, and put up lots of pix, so check out Bruce's Jar Page on Collectors Weekly. Read about his adventures at the York Show -- his excitement is infectious. Be sure to click on all of his York Show links to see his great pix. He photographed all of the amazing displays. I wish I'd have been there, but thanks, Bruce, for the travelogue!
But wait - there's more: Read what some York Expo show attendees wrote on the comment thread about the York Show on the Ball Jar Collector Communtiy site.
I can really relate with Bruce's comment:
Just look at this Mason's 1858 Fruit Jars display by Jim Sears and Joe Merkel, as just one example. Bruce has many more display pix on his page. They'll either break your heart, or inspire you to get out on the hunt!

When I see great displays, or magazine or book articles about a fabulous collection, with pristine, rare, awesome items, I get so depressed. My "accumulation" of treasures is definitely "novice" level. I always think, what's the point, all the good stuff's been acquired already, or is priced too high for me... But then I look around my home, and I see a few gems.
I think that I need to:
- A) Keep learning, so that I can,
- B) Acquire better pieces, and
- C) EDIT, edit, edit!
I remember reading a novel, and the character had many antiques collections, but he only ever kept the BEST 3 items in each category. I don't know if I can be that ruthless, but I do plan to try to get rid of the "lower" caliber items.
Miscellaneous notes of interest:
- Labor Day is early this year, on September 1st. So the last big garage sale weekend of the season is actually August 29-Sept.1

- "Celebrate our anniversary with 15% off all orders in August! No need for coupons! All orders in August will receive 15% off during checkout. "
How to Save Gas ~ Go to a Virtual Toy Show
If you're like me, these days you probably pause before you drive anywhere. Of course, if you don't go to that auction or show, you can't make that score that will pay for several tanks of gas!
Going to a virtual show won't get you that score, but it will save gas, and educate you on what is really, really good. And maybe inspire you to get out there and hunt!
I look forward to perusing the online catalogs of several of the better auction houses, especially when they have toy and advertising items. It's like going to the Indy Ad Show, and it's companion Toy Show.
An article in my latest newsletter from the Antique Trader alerted me to Morphy Auctions upcoming sale. They have an awesome selection of ART GLASS (MOSER), and tons of ADVERTISING and TOYS, including the really rare HUBLEY toy motorbikes pictured.
- Read the Antique Trader's article: "Morphy Auctions prepares for its 'best Fall sale ever"- Sept. 11-13 in Denver, Pa.
- Morphy Auction's Auction Catalog -- spend some time looking at their catalog. I fell in love with some of the vintage theatrical posters, the figural silver napkin rings, and the Jetsons toys, to name but a few. I'm sure you'll find something to your liking.

They have a huge variety of toys - these are just 3 of the ones with the highest estimates. - Here's a little info on Hubley:
- Founded by John Hubley in about 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Hubley Manufacturing Company made cast iron toys. Its earliest products were trains and trolleys powered by live steam, electricity, or spring mechanisms. Hubley produced stoves and still banks beginning in 1909. It later added horse-drawn fire fire and circus wagons, cap pistols, trucks, cars, motorcycles, and, in the 1920s, dollhouse kitchen appliances. By 1940 Hubley had become the world's largest manufacturer of cast-iron toys. Increasing freight charges and foreign competition made the company switch to die-cast toys of a zinc alloy. Hubley was acquired by Gabriel Industries in 1965 and now produces die-cast zinc and plastic toys as well as hobby kits.
Remember the old Yellow Pages ad -- "Let your fingers do the walking"?? Well, now, you can "Let your computer do the driving!"

Top 10 List CAMBRIDGE GLASS

My good friend Roger Rhodes recently had an article he wrote published in the Lima News paper. It's a recounting of the fun he had attending the recent Cambridge Glass Convention.
- He writes:
- " Considering these tight economic times and the high price of gasoline, my wife, Linda, and I decided to spend our summer vacation in Ohio. Friends Lyle and Linda Stemen from Toledo are avid Cambridge Glass collectors and attend the yearly convention of the National Cambridge Collectors Inc., a national organization dedicated to the study and preservation of glass produced by the Cambridge Glass Co. in Cambridge, Ohio. This year they invited us to tag along.
It seemed like a good idea. I didn't know anything about Cambridge Glass. I had a lot to learn. It was the 35th annual Convention, held June 25 to 29, with them theme "The Elegance of Cambridge Glass." " - Read all of Roger's report here.

Be sure to watch the slide show at the top of the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc. home page, and you'll see some stunning rare Cambridge glass items-- wow! Check out their museum pix, too. Here's a sampling ...

- Be sure to check out Collector's Weekly's informative Elegant Glass Page to learn more about collecting Cambrdidge Glass, and other manufacturer's "Elegant Glass". They have links to lots of helpful sites, and they show ebay COMPLETED prices.
